WEIL Process - (UV) Oxidation for Cleaning and Disinfecting (Waste)Water
(UV) oxidation is often used to remove organic contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceutical residues and other chemicals from water. It can also be used to disinfect water by killing bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms.
Oxidising agents frequently used in practice are chlorine (Cl2), ozone (O3), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The oxidising agents are added to the water, e.g. using dosing pumps, and mixed in. The UV radiation causes a photochemical reaction in the DNA of microorganisms within seconds, which leads to their death. No chemicals are added to the water in the UV systems, so that no undesirable by-products can arise.
