Ion exchangers are used for the selective removal of ions from water or aqueous solutions. They are usually used for softening, partial or complete desalination.
The principle of ion exchangers is based on replacing ions (=electrically charged particles) dissolved in the water with other ions from the ion exchanger material. Usually, granular, solid synthetic resins are used as the ion exchanger material. They must be insoluble in water and chemically resistant, but above all they must be suitable for ion exchange.
