Various filtration processes and filter media are used in water treatment, especially for particle separation. They are based on the principles of sieving and surface or depth filtration.
Tissue and plastic filters
Filter inserts made of plastic fibres (polypropylene, polyester, viscose, etc.) are also frequently used as filter media. The industrially prefabricated filter inserts are manufactured as filter cartridges, bag filters, filter fleece or filter cloth.
Gravel and sand filters
Sand (gravel) is often used as a filter medium. The filter systems consist of a container (e.g. made of steel, GRP or concrete) which is filled with filter sand and through which the water to be treated is channelled. If the sand filters are used for deferrisation and demanganisation, the water is usually aerated first.
