Facility for Removing Heavy Metals from Precipitation Water
Treated media: Industrial effluent
Flow rate: 25 (m3/h)
Substances: Heavy metals
Processes: Filtration, Flocculation, Neutralization, Precipitation, Sedimentation, Sludge dewatering, Sludge thickening
Commissioning: 2016
KF Company: Weil Wasseraufbereitung GmbH
Cause
Despite daily cleaning of the yard areas with wet sweeper machines, the rainwater that accumulates on the premises and roof areas of an old battery recycling company is contaminated with lead and other heavy metals. Weil Wasseraufbereitung was commissioned to plan and construct a rainwater treatment plant to minimize the entry of heavy metals into the nearby receiving water. Due to the limited space available on the customer's premises, the available floor space was limited and meant that the entire plant had to extend over three levels with intermediate floors made of a steel structure. The planning and execution of the steel structure to accommodate the entire plant was part of the planning and delivery scope.
Chemical-physical treatment plant for removing heavy metals from precipitation water
The aim of the precipitation water treatment plant is to remove remaining settleable or filterable substances as well as heavy metals in dissolved form from the precipitation water, which would otherwise end up untreated in the receiving water.
With the help of a flocculation and precipitation process, the dissolved metals (lead, cadmium, nickel, copper, zinc, antimony, etc.) are converted into a filterable form. The heavy metal flakes are then separated from the water using a lamella separator and a permanently self-cleaning, dynamic sand filter. The solids are discharged after pre-thickening via a filter press.
The discharge volume flow of approx. 25 m³/h, which corresponds to the throughput capacity to be achieved by the precipitation water treatment plant, is discharged into the receiving water via a control and sampling shaft at the existing stormwater overflow basin.
