Precipitation and flocculation are chemical water treatment processes that convert dissolved or non-separable water constituents into a separable form. Precipitation/flocculation is usually followed by a further treatment stage (filtration, sedimentation or flotation) to separate the substances from the water.
During precipitation, precipitants such as iron and aluminum salts are added to the water, which react chemically with certain dissolved substances in the water. This reaction converts the substances into insoluble and therefore separable compounds.
Flocculation in water treatment involves the agglomeration (clumping) of colloidal and finely suspended substances in the water through the addition of flocculants, such as polyelectrolytes, in order to increase the efficiency of floc formation.
