Biological purification processes are used to remove undesirable substances from water based on the natural metabolism of microorganisms. In practice, there are very different systems in which microbiological processes play an important role. Activated sludge tanks for COD removal in municipal wastewater treatment, fixed-bed reactors for the elimination of pollutants or biological filters for the removal of manure are just a few examples.
During the metabolism of the microorganisms, undesirable substances in the water to be treated are converted into other products (e.g. carbon dioxide, water). The biological processes can take place in the presence of oxygen (aerobic) or without atmospheric oxygen (anaerobic). Biological purification therefore generally requires hardly any chemicals or energy.
